One day I received a big letter from Guernsey.

At first, I didn’t quite understand if I had read the country’s name correctly. Still, I immediately opened the envelope and wondered what was inside.

It turned out to be a charming and pleasant woman Denise from Guernsey.
Frankly, I first heard about such a country, so I spent a lot of time on the Internet to collect very interesting facts about this tiny country, which I will tell you below.

"A piece of France that broke away from her fell into the water and was picked up by the English," was how Victor Hugo, the greatest French writer, who lived there in exile for three years, wrote of Guernsey.

Denise spoiled me a lot as she put many gifts in my envelope, it was a fridge magnet and a lot of signed postcards with stamps from this country.

Shopping in Guernsey is definitely better than in the UK or the European Union. If you’re planning to update your closet soon, it’s a great place to do so. The thing is, in addition to the well-known brands, there’s a huge number of small family-owned clothing stores in Guernsey, where you can find things that are handmade and, moreover, have no analogs.

In addition to clothing, the island has many stores selling household appliances, jewelry, cosmetics, and perfumes.

Apart from the usual stores, once a week, there’s the Fresh Friday Market or Friday Market in the Market Square, where traders from all over the island sell their wares at bargain prices.

Transport

Guernsey has two ways to get there: by water transport or air. The ferry from Great Britain takes about four hours and allows you time for some leisurely shopping while waiting at your destination, which is considered one way in Guernsey (they have another).

You can also choose a quicker route if needed with an airplane ride that only requires 2-3 hrs’ travel but leaves less room for luxury items on sale back home!

The flight from London Airport (Gatwick) takes about 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a train to Weymouth (about 3 hours) and then take a ferry to Guernsey (about 2 hours). It is also possible to get to Guernsey by high-speed catamarans from Weymouth and Poole. However, they do not run in bad weather.

The airport connects Guernsey with cities in Britain (primarily London) and France (Grenoble, Geneva, Zurich, etc.) and Germany, Ireland, and Scotland.

Public transport in Guernsey is represented by buses and cabs. To move around Guernsey you can also rent a bicycle or a car. And renting a car is possible right at the airport.

Importing weapons, poisonous and explosive substances, materials of terrorist or pornographic content is prohibited.

You may bring no more than 200 pieces of cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco, 1 liter of spirits, or 2 liters of wine without duty.

It is prohibited to take out of the country goods of cultural and historical value.

Car Rental

There are both well-known international rental brands and local ones. However, the level of the fleet does not affect the level of the car.

Bus stops are signposted, but you can also catch a bus on the road, especially between towns and villages.

Buses do not stop only on bridges and at busy intersections, or at places where dropping off and picking up passengers could cause an accident.

Castle Cornet

Castle Cornet is located on the island of Guernsey on the English Channel.

The castle is not on the island but on a nearby small island, which connects to Guernsey at low tide. The castle is now connected to the Guernsey shore by a stone pier.

The castle was built here from 1206 to 1256, after the partition of the Duchy of Normandy, when the Channel Islands remained under the authority of the English kings. The fortress was a classic Norman castle with a citadel.

The Little Chapel

Le Dehus Dolmen

There are several truly ancient monuments in Guernsey which tell the story of those who inhabited the island thousands of years ago.

• Finance is the biggest now, previously Tourism and Agriculture.
• On the island don’t have as many dairy farms as we used to, and more recently, local import some milk from neighbouring Channel Island Jersey.
• In Guernsey export Tomatoes and flowers, mainly Freesias, to the UK.
• There are two types of housing licences: the local and open markets. Local is for people born here or who lived here for over 20 years. The open market is for newcomers and is much more expensive. Once you have lived in Open market accommodation, you may not go back to the local market.

Life here is mainly peaceful, with a low crime rate; crimes like murder are few and far between.

It’s a lovely safe place to live, but you do get the need to get off the rock now and again.

We can reach France and UK by sea and air.

We always have to travel via the UK for holidays, making it more expensive.

We can no longer get a ferry to Weymouth, and the train that used to meet that boat no longer runs.

“Russian warship go fuck yourself!” – Internet meme, a phrase uttered on February 24, 2022, by a Ukrainian border guard in response to a Russian warship’s offer to surrender. The event took place during the attack on Snake Island during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the “Russian warship” – the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser Moscow, was a participant in the event, and the author of the phrase was Ukrainian border guard Roman Valentinovich Gribov.

The phrase has become a popular motto for various reasons, such as its use in media and art. It’s also frequently used by government officials to deliver messages at mass rallies or public speeches; you can find this word on t-shirts worn by people all over the country!

Further fates of the participants of the event: Roman Gribov, after the exchange of prisoners, was awarded. The cruiser “Moscow” sank on April 14, 2022 (according to the Russian Ministry of Defense – as a result of an explosion of ammunition and during the subsequent towing of the ship to the port. According to the statement of the Ukrainian side and expert opinion – it was the result of the Ukrainian Navy’s Neptun missile system strike of April 13, 2022).

On June 30, Snake Island itself was returned to Ukrainian control.

Let’s get back to the stamps and postcards ☝️

On April 12, Ukrposhta presented and put into circulation the first martial law postage stamps “Russian warship, go…!” («Русскій воєнний корабль, іді …!») On the day of the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine on February 24, a phrase spoken by Ukrainian border guards, defenders of Snake Island, to the Russian ship on the offer to surrender has become a symbol for bravery and an indomitable spirit among Ukrainians in the struggle against Russia.

The promotional event “First Day” featuring Igor Smelyansky, General Director of Ukrposhta, and the writer of the popular saying, defender of Fr. Snakey Marine Roman Gribov occurred at Kiev’s Main Post Office. At the same time as Kiev, all regions in Ukraine held their own promotional events with special postmarks reading “Russian warship go…!”

The person who redemption ceremony in Lviv was the one who made the sketch of the postage stamp and envelope “The First Day”, they are also winner of the national competition for best sketch for a postage stamp. The Crimean citizen Boris Groh’s work had more votes than anyone else – 8K Facebook and Instagram users voted for it.

The postage stamp “Russian warship, go…!” was produced by Ukrposhta in two denominations: for paying postal items inside Ukraine (denomination F, equivalent to 23 UAH) and sending stuff abroad (denomination W, equal to $1.50).

As of mid-April, 700,000 stamps had been issued, of which 200,000 were reserved for Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories, including Crimea. Two sheets of stamps, along with a T-shirt, were given to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in gratitude for Britain’s support of Ukraine.

On 26 February 2022, the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed a railway junction that connected Ukrainian and Russian railways. By doing so, they prevented the Russian army from using railroads to transport military equipment or personnel into Ukraine. We are impressed by this global community of creative individuals who dedicate part of their time and resources to brighten other people’s days. To celebrate this milestone and give back to our loyal users, we wanted to share some exciting updates that we’ll be rolling out in the coming months:

The first update is a new design for the website.

We understand that the website is presently difficult to use on mobile devices — this is something we are working on and it is a major goal for us. Making the website more mobile-friendly (responsive) has taken longer than we would like, but we are committed to doing so. We're not releasing a mobile app, but we do intend for the website's mobile version to have comparable usability while ensuring that the entire website's functionality is accessible on all devices (and not just certain parts of it).

In addition, we would like to inform you that we will be migrating our servers next month. While the process should only take a few minutes, it is possible that your bookmark or link to postcrossing might not work. We encourage you to update any bookmarks and links so they point directly to us.

However, please rest assured that this migration does not mean we are shutting down postcrossing any time soon! Instead, this means we’ll be focusing our resources on adding even more features so everyone can enjoy postcrossing for many years to come.

Everything there is to know about Queen Elizabeth II:

Queen Elizabeth II is very fond of correspondence. Her Majesty looks through all the mail that comes to Buckingham Palace. And that’s several boxes of greetings and documents every day. You can also get a reply from the Queen. So why not give it a try? 

Every day Buckingham Palace receives about 200 to 300 letters (not counting emails). They first go to the Correspondence Team, are screened and sent to the Queen. They are all shown to the Queen and they all get a reply. 

Sometimes it happens within 3 days. You will receive the answer on Buckingham Palace stamp paper with an understandable degree of formality, but there will be a personal touch there too: you will usually find references to what you have written in the text. 

The letter will be composed by one of the Lady-in-Waiting on behalf of the queen, and it will be typewritten. But the address and signature are handwritten. Letters begin differently, such as “I am commanded by H.M. the Queen to thank you for your recent letter, the contents of which have been noted”, “The queen asked me…”, “The Queen wishes me to write and thank you…”

Additional information: Be careful with your letters, because they are checked by the Correspondence Team. This service screens out correspondence about things that the queen cannot influence - political disputes, personal problems, requests for financial aid and asylum, and the like. Such letters will be answered. But just a formal one.

It’s not a smart idea to give anything to Her Majesty. For security reasons, the Royal Mail will not allow any shipments to Elizabeth II.

Her conduct was much more regal and proper: she gave and received numerous presents. After the coronation, Her Majesty provided food to her own people. It might have been canned salmon, a real luxury in postwar Britain.

The good news is that Her Majesty accepts correspondence even from abroad, from any country (Guernsey, Africa or Dominican Republic). You can easily write to Elizabeth II and expect a reply. What do you say in a letter to The Queen?

Before you can actually write a letter to The Queen, you first need to know what to say in the letter. That’s why we’ve put together these ideas for what you might want to include in your letter.

One of the most important things to remember is that you should always address The Queen as “Your Majesty” or “Ma’am”. You can also use “Queen Elizabeth II” if you want.

Additionally, some people might be wondering how they could get their idea for a charity project featured by The Queen or one of her charities – sending them a letter about this is your best bet at securing that meeting (or article). Another possible topic is thanking The Queen for visiting your town or city, or for opening an event.

As for me, I invited Queen Elizabeth II to the premiere of performance the special in my city. Does that sound silly? I know the Queen loves the theatre, so I thought it would be interesting if she came to my country where she'd never been in her life. 

The queen should be congratulated on the holidays, and a New Year’s postcard should be sent. Her elegant style should be celebrated. Wishing her good moods and health is an excellent idea. Tell your personal tale — what you do and why you decided to contact her. The letter may either be handwritten or printed on a computer keyboard.

How do you address Queen Elizabeth II?

What do you say in a letter to her? These are questions that many people might not know the answer to. I mentioned it above, but I’ll remind you again.

Addressing The Queen can be done in different ways, but the most formal way is to use ‘Her Majesty’ followed by the person’s name. For example, you would write ‘Dear Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’.

When it comes to what to say in a letter to The Queen, there are no set rules. However, it’s generally polite to introduce yourself and state your purpose for writing. You may also wish to congratulate The Queen on any recent achievements or thank her for her service to the country. Whatever you choose to say, make sure your letter is well written and free of mistakes.

What will be the answer?

Unfortunately, the Queen will not be able to reply to your letter in person. She will simply read the letter. On behalf of Elizabeth II, one of the nine Maids of Honor will compose the response. They are also known as maids of honour.

Although they are only referred to as “lady-in-waiting” or “ladies of honour,” these ladies were formerly royal companions: they entertained the queens, assisted them with dressing, washing, and the like. They now have other responsibilities. The ladies of honour serve as Elizabeth II’s escorts on official visits and other business events, run various errands for her, and write letters on her behalf.

The answer will come tentatively from a few weeks to a few months. The answer came to me three months later.

It will be a special stamped paper from Buckingham Palace. The royal representatives will be sure to thank you for what you have written. And they will tell you how Elizabeth II responded to the letter. You’ll be pleased, no doubt about it!

Are there any other ways of writing a letter to The Queen?

Yes, you can also email The Queen via her website or send her a message through social media. However, if you want to send her a letter in the traditional way, you can send it to Buckingham Palace. You can also visit the British Library’s exhibition on letters sent to The Queen over time.

Can you email the Queen of England?

Yes, you can email The Queen by filling out a form on her website. You’ll need to provide your full name, postal address, and email address – and be sure to include the subject of your message!

Why do people send mail overseas?

In general, people tend to send mail overseas when they need a letter in a particular language in order to apply for a visa or work with an international business. Sending a letter can also be necessary when you have something culturally relevant to include, such as wishing someone the best of luck on their wedding day in another country.
